Skanthapuram village lift irrigation project
Improving Water Sustainability and Food Security through Solar Powered Water Pumping in Skandapuram Lift Irrigation Project of Kilinochchi District
Will they yield the benefits for their yearning
Lift irrigation of Akkarayan
The Lift Irrigation Skandapuram, Kilinochchi District
The “Lift Irrigation” in Skandapuram, located in the Kilinochchi District, was conceived and initiated by Mr. Chandranathan, an alumnus of Jaffna Central College and the Planning Director of the “Co-operative Society for Humanitarian Activities,” in collaboration with other society members. This project was successfully completed at a cost of 3.8 million Sri Lankan Rupees.
The funding for this “Lift Irrigation” came from generous contributions from the following organizations:
– “Kiioeople” from the United Kingdom
– “Water,” an organization from Switzerland responsible for solar panel installation
– “Wilde Ganzen” from the Netherlands
– Displaced Sri Lankan people living abroad
The individuals who have greatly benefited from this “Lift Irrigation” are grateful and wholeheartedly thank all the contributors. This project stands as a significant asset for these people.
Agriculture serves as the fundamental livelihood for Tamil people, and inadequate irrigation severely affects farmers. The northern region of Sri Lanka, being a dry zone without rivers and with minimal rainfall, has led to these difficulties. The completion of this irrigation plan offers a long-term solution to the suffering of farmers due to water scarcity.
By not solely relying on the government, displaced Tamils living abroad legally raised funds, meticulously planned, and successfully aided over 200 farming families. Similarly, through collective efforts, displaced Tamils residing abroad have the potential to make the Tamil homeland self-sufficient and fertile. This selfless project serves as a commendable example.
Efforts similar to those undertaken by displaced Tamils living abroad should extend to different parts of the Tamil homeland. Towards the end, you will find a video clip featuring Mr. Chandranathan explaining the successful implementation of this plan.
